STUDENTS FIGHT BACK
Recently there were two separate incidents where students in South East London were forced to call upon what they have learned in class:
1) N.A. pre-emptively took down a thug that followed racist abuse with a double-hand clothing grab. The technique was a variation of what he'd learned in class.
He did the right thing - dropped the many bags of shopping he was holding, then responded quickly to the guy's next move.
Failing to do that, he could have ended up far worse off.
After seeing his much larger friend get dropped so easily, his accomplice made the right decision to back off.
After only 1 class (his free taster) under his belt, this speaks volumes for N.A. as a student - and Urban Krav Maga as a whole.
2) 'I was shopping with my wife and walked into Argos just as a bloke was leaving shouting that he was off to get his chiv, he then went to his car and fetched a knife. There were women and children everywhere, so I positioned myself to the flank of the entrance. When he came back in with his knife he grabbed the bloke around the neck, I grabbed him by the collar and threw him to the ground and followed up with a couple of knees to the ribs. I then ejected him from the building and waited for the police to attend'
- Richard, serving soldier in the British forces
It's a shame when people are put into these situations, but it's good to know that they did what they have trained hard for - to protect themselves and their fellow man.
Only with suitable training are you able to survive a hostile situation relatively unhurt - without having to rely on pure luck.

TRAIN FOR YOUR ENVIRONMENT
Some thoughts from one of our students who is a serving police officer on environmental issues to think about when training.
When we train it usually takes place inside a building or hall, which is convenient, warm and safe. We all train diligently and try our hardest to do the technique we are shown by the instructors. But take the same technique outside into the urban environment, will the technique that works on the floor of the hall which is flat and smooth or training mat which is soft, work as well? Not because you haven’t trained hard or listened too your instructor but were you mentally ready for the outdoors or in your head are you are still inside the dojo. This is why when I train i don’t just think about the room I am in but visualize the street, club or pub.
Next time when you are walking home from work or out for the day look at the how uneven the pavement is, what street furniture is around to help (possible cover or use as a weapon) or hinder (trip or block your way). Look at the bins, benches rubbish outside shops, all things that can affect you making the right decision. When the weather is dry, warm and its daylight, you can see where you’re going, you might have to fight or do a take down and restrain. (Remember that not only will you hurt the attacker but you will probably get cuts and bruises yourself). But don’t forget when it’s dark and the weather is not so good your surroundings can look dramatically different and there maybe no one around too call for help.
The environment can be a very unforgiving place. Here is a cheery thought, how about rolling around in puke, piss, blood or alcohol (yours or theirs) at the local taxi queue, bus stop or train station or there’s dog crap on the pavement, That take down does not seem so appealing, but the reality is this is the environment you may have to put your training into practice. I’m not saying you should go out and roll around in any of the above for the experience or be paranoid all the time but just be aware of where you are and who and what is around.. Do you have to walk past that alleyway to get to the carpark or would it be safer to go a different way? This is why I chose to be an instructor in Urban Krav Maga. Not only is it practical and effective but training can take place inside but also could be in the park, a grass area or on a bus. When you next go to a pub or club, look at the amount of people, listen too the noise and see the potential danger signs. It could be the difference of having a good night with your friends/family or getting attacked. Also remember how quickly the environment can change. Imagine you have not seen the danger signs, you have had to defend yourself and managed to escape. You’re running away. One minute you’re pounding along on the pavement making Hussein Bolt look slow then just as suddenly it could be slippery grass, mud, gravel and before you know it your on your arse with your attackers stamping all over you.. Be aware of your environment and possible escape routes.
I will give you an example of learning the hard way. I was on patrol with my mate and it came through on the radio that a male was looking into vehicles at the local shopping centre. Driving around we spotted a male that fitted the description. I jumped out and he saw us and walked away. I was gently jogging after him past members of the public. We went down a side alley and as I came around the corner he was speeding up and I had to run across a road, and an open grassy area where I nearly stacked it in front of a queue of people waiting at the bus stop. But I managed to recover and keep going. (At this point I’m sure I heard an elated intake of breath at my stumble and then oh…of disappointment at my expert recovery) We ran down a river bank under a bridge where I shouted at the male to stop (I can’t say what I said) but stop he did. After name checks ect…he was allowed to go. I thought about this short run of no more than 10-15sec and how the environment changed in such a short time, an alleyway, crowd, open space with slippery grass, river bank and then back on pavement under a bridge.
Just one other thing before I sign off. How many of you walk around with i-pods or mobile phones plugged in to your ears? Quite a few I bet, but think how this distracts and how detached you are from your environment and what is happening around you. How easy is for people to approach you without you noticing at the last minute. I don’t want to be a kill joy but for that short journey depending where you are is it worth taking the risk?

URBAN KRAV BEGINNER FIGHTS OFF 3 ATTACKERS, ONE WITH A BLADE
One of our new guys (student of chief instructor Stewart McGill), a very nice gentle guy, fought off 3 attackers last night one of whom was carrying a blade. Check out his story here:
“On my way home from your class this evening three youths mugged me in the car park outside my flats in Deptford The problem was I had a coat over one arm and a rucksack in the other. The main assailant was waving a knife around. We tussled for a bit – them trying to get my stuff – I made a lot of noise to get an audience from the surrounding flats, got aggressive, didn’t get cornered and fought them off (only the guy with the knife really tried to have a go at me). I didn’t really think there was any point in running (they were all teenagers I reckon – though hoods obscured their faces). The overlooking windows opening and neighbours shouting made them eventually disappear.
Anyway, thanks. A few weeks ago I wouldn’t have had the attitude to deal with the situation. Though I suspect the sensible thing would have been to have let them take my stuff (as the police subsequently observed). I did think about it for a split second but decided to fight. I’m a bit wired now so a few scotches are in order.”
He’s only done 7 lessons so particularly proud of him. Training points;
don’t look vulnerable or distracted, if you’re carrying stuff and both arms are occupied then attackers are more likely to go for you. Scum are like any other predators in the animal world, they go for what they see as the easiest meat.
if you decide to go for it, do so with aggression as extreme as you can, the bad guys often win because they go into a situation already pumped up, the good guys need to be able to get into “fight mode” very quickly to survive; we’d been doing some drills to train this just a few hours before this crap happened to our guy so maybe it helped.
make a lot of noise to attract attention – this can deter the scum as they often want to get in and out as quickly as possible with minimal attention.
The Police will often advise compliance and I can understand this – they see the damage done to some people that fight back. However, if you do comply you can feel like hell for months or even years afterwards, particularly men as it makes us question our manhood etc.
It’s a tough one this as I can see both sides – another problem with compliance is that sometimes the bastards want to hurt you even after you’ve handed the dough over.
Avoidance is always the best option, check out our Personal Safety Guide here...

The Seni show at the weekend was a great success. Europe's largest martial arts and combat sports expo.
Anyone who is anyone in the industry was there. From kung fu grandmasters to champion boxers, UFC and UCMMA cage fighters to living legends, celebrities, strongmen, gymnasts, bodybuilders and more.
It was packed out with dozens of interesting and exciting demonstrations and workshops by many different martial arts and fighting systems. Also many companies were there to show off the latest innovations in training equipment and technology.
Urban Krav Maga was the only Krav Maga organisation asked to attend the show. We had a stand, a fully-booked workshop (photos viewable on Facebook) and we gave an awesome demonstration.

'Fighting On The Buses' Seminar...
A regular seminar held by Chief Instructor Stewart McGill, at Plumstead Bus Garage, South East London.
Learn how to defend yourself in the confined space of a double decker bus. Also applies to potential situations on trains and tubes etc. This is a great seminar, which always gets top reviews and feedback:
'Just a quick note to say how Fui Mee, Lee Ann and I enjoyed your 'Fighting on Buses' workshop on Sunday. It was superbly practical and clearly proved why so many techniques that look good are of little value in real life close encounters of the wrong kind! We look forward to attending more of these. Please convey our thanks also to your great team of instructors'
- Swee Lip Quek (CEO, *Master Sken Academy)
*For those of you who don't know, Master Sken is an awesome Muay Thai fighter and teacher, very well known in the business.
'It was great seminar. Can't wait for the next one'
- Toyin Oshodi

30th March 2010
One of my students 'A.K.' successfully fended off a mugger at the weekend, in Brixton. The assailant grabbed him round the throat and demanded his money. A.K. used the larynx/jugular notch-probe, combined with a wrist lock, to drop him.
A.K. is not the biggest guy you would see on the street and the attacker was considerably larger (over six foot tall and over twenty stone in weight). Using a simple leverage technique, combined with a painful probe to a primary target area, A.K. was able to escape the situation unharmed. In a high-stress, adrenalised situation, A.K. was able to remember the training he has learned so far. After only three lessons (six hours of training), this is a testament to the effectiveness of Urban Krav Maga.
